It all started in 1963 when James Todd began to build the company from scratch. He was determined to create a distinctive, pioneering fabric house for the UK, a feat he accomplished at a remarkable rate. Capitalising on recent trends as seen in Scandinavia, he was able to secure import and distribution agreements with key designers, whose work had never before been seen in the UK, to bring bold, innovative design to the then functional and dreary high street. The importance of his contribution cannot be overstated. He was a key player in the transformation of British soft furnishings.

This early history helped to define an era. Think of the 1960s and ’70s printed fabrics and you think of psychedelia, paisley, huge geometrics and dazzling clashes of the brightest colours. You can still see many of Hardy’s earliest fabrics from classic films and tv of the period. James’s son Jeremy Todd took the reins of the business in the 1990’and remains Managing Director. The company grew and evolved over the years, incorporating Hardy Fabrics in 2010, which today is our principle brand, with worldwide distribution and a firm place in the UK textile establishment.

Some of the collections available at C&H include the contemporary Melrose fabrics which include many beautiful colours from the light and neutral to the truly spectacular. Tutti fabrics are a collection of heavy, marbled curtain fabric, Tutti partners perfectly with the other members of the Maestro Collection (Altissimo and Staccato).
